About Us
PHYSOC, the Swansea Physics society, main objective is to bring physicists at the university together and create bonds between the different year groups by organising events both inside and outside the medium of physics. The secondary aims of the society are to create links with other young physics students in Wales and of 2007, encourage interest in the subject for those who do not study at degree level by opening the society to all students.
PHYSOC began its life as a departmental society several decades ago, making it one of the oldest in Swansea University. However, it is now part of the students union.
Traditionally the PHYSOC President has always been elected from level 2. However in the early 2000s the society started to fade away and died. This is where tradition broke down as in 2005 foundation student Matthew Daubeny become president with Richard Hunt as treasurer and Nicholas Corlette as sectary.
As Matt entered level 1 he encouraged new freshers to join the society and signed PHYSOC up to the IOP. He also run a logo competition and brought in PHYSOC hoodies. However in February 2006 announced he was giving up the position of president. He was replaced in May by level 1 student David Barry.
David's plan was to make the society more social based. For this he introduced a new committee member and a social secretary. This was taken up by fellow level 1 student Christopher Barnett. Due to this happening late in the academic year and the onset of exams PHYSOC was limited to a few nights out in the student club.
Over the summer, between level 1 and level 2, David resigned as president. Chris took over as acting president and like Matt the year before encouraged the new freshers to join the society with the incentive of paint balling in the near future, an idea originally thought of by David.
On Wednesday 10th October 2007 Chris Barnett officially took over as president. As his first act he replaced Nick with fresher and level 1 student Katie Papadovassilakis as secretary and introduced several new committee members taking the form of level reps.
Over the next 3 months PHYSOC started to take off with events such as paint balling, laser dome and a Christmas dinner in Miah's as well as organising a series of talks (Prof. Dunbar, Chris Baker, Pete Watkeys, Johannes Schmude). Also a new competition was started to design a new logo. This was won by first year student, Frances Jean Fox. This prompted a new design of a hoody.
The society also started taking a more sporting roll by creating a rugby 7s team that would the become a full 15s team. Also a talk began about starting a football team to take on the Physics staff, re-awakening an old tradition of staff Vs students.
PHYSOC also began to stretch out, creating a link with Aberystwyth University Physics Society which, also, is called Physoc. This link is to encourage sports competition between the societies but also to help with the arrangements of trips.
In late January Rich Hunt announced that he was giving up the position of treasurer. The free post was taken up by Martin Maxwell in addition to being level 0 rep. A full list of our committee can be found here.
