L.D.Y.S. wins Polling Station for Campus!

Thanks to the campaign initiated by the Liberal Democrat Youth and Student group at the University we now have a polling station on campus. Students can now have more of a say on how Wales is run, on issues such as health, education and the environment which directly affects us.

For example the National Assembly has voted to pay the top-up fees for Welsh students in Welsh universities and colleges until 2011. Prescriptions are now free in Wales, smoking has been banned in public places and with new powers coming in to force after the May Election, its decisions will affect everyone in Wales, including Students.

"Homophobia is Gay" Campaign Update

Homophobic bullying continues to be rife in schools & 65 per cent of young lesbian, gay and bisexual people experience homophobic bullying in school. Almost three in five (58 per cent) of those experiencing bullying never report it but, if they do tell a teacher, 62 per cent of the time, nothing is done.

Research shows that homophobic bullying:
· Increases truancy rates
· Increases self-harm and suicide by young people
· Lowers educational attainment

Liberal Democrat Youth & Students believe that ALL students have a right to receive education in a safe and secure environment.

Since we launched our 'Homophobia is Gay' campaign last year, we have attracted interest from over 10,000 people who have signed our petition stating the following:
1. Homophobic taunts and name calling in schools should be challenged immediately by staff.
2. All schools' anti-bullying policies should be required to include measures specifically to deal with homophobic bullying.
3. At least one teacher in every school should undergo training which includes how to tackle homophobic bullying.
